The book has a large cast of well rounded and deep characters that are intelligent, flawed, and surprising in the ways they act making this character driven story a joy to read. First the Protagonist is not a perfect person he has many flaws which include drinking, and a hard time dealing with emotions making the challenges he has to overcome all the more exciting. If he was not flawed there would be little reason to read the book because the protagonist is not relatable because he would be so perfect. Next, all characters are intelligent, even the some what brutish villain, this makes more complex and more appealing scenarios in the book altogether making it a better read. If they were not intelligent it would make you get annoyed at how stupid these characters are in the scenarios, so intelligent characters make such a better read. Furthermore the characters are surprising in the way they act, in the end of the book (this is just a minor spoiler, it will not spoil the story) the innocent unassuming Bast threatens Chronicler and makes Chronicler a slave to Bast's will in this quote "' Listen you cannot hurt me. you cannot run or hide. in this I will not be defied"(Rothfuss 660). This element of surprise make the book more interesting to read and find out a characters motivation. So the excellent cast of characters definitely add to the book.

The book explains how its world works, while other fantasy books just graze over these facts as minor details, but The Name of the Wind explains itself making it a more enlightening read. The Magic used in the book is called sympathy, the book explains how it works when other books make there magic next to godlike, this explanation of how sympathy works though has you understand its seriousness and abilities. If you did not know this Kvothe would have no need to go to the university because he would be so skilled. Next Syguldry another type of magic that creates magical items is also well explained, this makes some of the impossible feats performed in the book more possible. If not the world would seem to whimsical to be a mature book, but it keeps enough fantasy whimsy to make it a fun book. Fantasy books usually make things unrealistic so that they could never happen but the book explains itself so well its seems like it could exist, for example in this quote the hero explains why the dragons in this world eat trees, "'It eats trees. Whole trees. Look at how big it is. Where could it possibly find enough meat?'"(Rothfuss 574). If the book didn't explain this it would just seem silly that dragons eat tree, but this quote shows how well the book explains itself. "The Name of the Wind" explains itself well making it a more interesting read.

"'The Name of the Wind" is a highly engrossing book it has no padding, the text is clear and vivid, and not a word of the book is wasted in its 660 pages. The book has something always going on from Kvothe fighting scrael to Kvothe discovering the catacombs of the university. The fact that it has something always going on makes it readable even though it is 660 pages. Furthermore the book has no padding to it which makes it even more engrossing, if it had padding it would just make it a drag to get through. Padding is detrimental to books because its only purpose is to lengthen the book if this book did it would ruin the exciting experience. Plus this 660 page book keeps you wanting to read it because something new about the plot is added almost every chapter making a wonderful book. If the book can keep you going for 660 pages that must tell anyone that it is an awesome book. So in conclusion this book will always keep you going through out its length.

"' The Name of the Wind'" also features poetry which is important to the plot where other books have poetry to add a little bit of class to the book, but "The Name of the Wind" makes it important to the plot. In the poem below is a children's rhyme in the book but it has an importance because it tells the main character the signs of the Chandrian which helps him recognize the people that killed his parents. This gives Kvothe purpose to live and go to the University, if not he would have died on the streets of Tarbean because he had no purpose in living. Later when investigating a massacre Kvothe realizes that all the metal has rusted even if it was brand new leading him to realize it is a Chandrian attack. If he did not recognize this the ending of the book would have ended in the deaths of many villagers because he would have spent more time at the site. Later on he will realize that the massacre was because an ancient pot had signs of the Chandrian on them and that poem helped him realize the signs on the pot. In fact the next book is mostly about finding out one of the signs on the pot. So poetry plays a pivotal role instead of being needless just making the book that more intriguing.
"When the hearthfire turns to blue,
what to do? what to do?
run outside. run and hide
When your bright sword turns to rust?
Who to trust? Who to trust?
Stand alone. Standing stone.
See a woman pale as snow?
Silent come and silent go.
What's their plan? What's their plan?
Chandrian. Chandrian."
(Rothfuss 520-521)
