The four corner of civilization is the setting for "The Name of the Wind", the four major countries are Ceald, The commonwealth, Vintas, and Modeg. The Aturan empire was once a major power in the world with its main power being held with in the Church of Tehlin which worships there Deity Telhu, but the power of the church was in the order of Amyr which upheld religious law throughout the land and had the power to be above the law themselves because all they did was "for the Greater Good". The Emperor destroyed the Amyr because of there tyranny but with that act he removed the Church's power and thus his own, this is how the Aturan Empire collapsed. Still though the city of Atur is standing and radiates religious fervor and bigotry against the Edema Ruh. Vintas is another country that hates the Edema Ruh, Vintas is mainly run by its nobles who live in opulence, but it does have a king that is the richest man in the world. Next is the Kingdom of Modeg that is one of the more wild kingdoms being that it holds the Eld, a dense forest that has a large concentration of bandits. Ceald though is one of the more capitalistic countries that is famous for its loan sharks that basically rule most of the country because of the massive debts that are built. Finally the Commonwealth is where most of the story takes place and holds the worlds biggest city, Tarbean, and The University that is where Kvothe is trained to be an Arcanist. The University is most known for its Archives, a large rectangular stone tower that acts as a gigantic library, but it holds a workshop, a hospital, the universities main building itself, and the Crockery a insane asylum for arcanists. The Common wealth was once part of the Aturan empire but it was less religious and therefore when the empire collapsed it filled most of the power vacuum left behind and therefore is the most powerful of the four civilizations.
