The name of the wind By Patrick Rothfuss demonstrates the theme that we are changed by our surroundings, it is shown mostly in the beginning and a small part at the end of the book. In the beginning of the book after Kvothe's parents are killed he is forced to survive in the wild and he changes from a bright and energetic child to a person who's only goal is survival, Kvothe shows us this in a quote "' I was like an automaton thoughtlessly performing the actions that kept me alive'"(Rothfuss 127). This quote demonstrates who we can be changed by our natural surroundings, this is along with the theme of the book that says we change to our surroundings. Furthermore Kvothe explains in another quote of how he had to survive without the joy of his music and attributed that to why he was not his same happy go lucky self, "' My music. had it really been years since I held my lute"'(Rothfuss 192). Before his parents were killed he was always surrounded in music but when his only lute broke while in tarbean he had to live without his joy giving music, further demonstrating the theme of how surroundings change people. More over at the end of the book Bast explains to chronicler of how Kvothe has changed again but this time into an innkeeper, "' Now he sees himself as an innkeeper and an innkeeper at that.'"(Rothfuss 650). This quote finally shows that Kvothe's surroundings have changed again and that Kvothe has changed again, demonstrating the theme of the book that people are changed by there surroundings. The theme of the book that people are changed by there surroundings and the theme is displayed blatantly throughout the book an reoccurs multiple times.
A theme demonstrated in the book is that people will always have a prejudice where ever you go, whether its about a social class, a superstition, or on a group of people. Near the beginning of the book Kvothe sees that a constable and a mayor are trying to tell a old man to leave town because he is an arcanist, in this quote the mayor demonstrates his prejudice against the old man "' we're god fearing people in these parts we don't want any meddling with dark things best left alone.'" (Rothfuss 60). The mayor is saying that this person cant come to town because of the mayors prejudice and the local prejudice showing the theme that there will be prejudice every where. Furthermore while trying to wright a song about the supernatural Kvothe's father asks the arcanist about how to make the song appealing to everyone so the arcanist reveals to him that it might be impossible in this quote "'Every place has its little superstitions, and everyone laughs at what the folk across the river think'"(Rothfuss 86). This quote shows that there is even a prejudice against superstations further displaying the theme that there is prejudice every where. Finally when Kvothe is trying to sell a book to get himself out of poverty the pawn shop owner thinks he stole the book because he looks so poor, and Kvothe realizes the shopkeepers prejudice in this quote '"I realized how I must look covered in a years worth of alley dirt, trying to get a receipt for a book I had obviously stolen"(Rothfuss 197). This quote shows that people will have a prejudice even about the way people look further cementing that the theme that people everywhere have a prejudice. All in all the author shows the reader the cruelty of prejudice in the theme that people everywhere have a prejudice.
